ADRIFT

2004, 9 min. colour sound, 16mm-35mm.

"Adrift" is shot on the arctic island of Spitzbergen and in Norway.
It combines time-lapse photography with stop-motion animation of the landscape. Through camera-angles and framing the film gradually dislocates the viewer from a stable base where one loses the sense of scale and grounding.

- In Svalbard (Spitzbergen) I was in a landscape without many references to distance, scale and perspective.I wanted to work with this sense of dislocation, both visual and geographical and make the film itself be physically disorientating. This was done through different perspectives and fragmented framing and destabilizing the ground through stop-motion animation. For this reason it was important to complete it on 35mm so it could be shown on a big screen in the cinema.
